2025, A Calgary Odyssey

Two videos I made for ACAD 310C

The first video I made using public domain footage of old nigh footage timelaps of overhead views of Calgary and Calgary Streets, with an EBSynth video that incorporated HAL  9000 overtop of it, with a 3rd layer of HAL 9000 fading in and out of view from 0% to 10% opacity.

 

Second video used that as a base input feed in runway.ml with various prompt feds to explore ways it could be transformed to a 2025 A Calgary Odyssey; given some limitations of runwayh it's a shorter video, but I love how it gives an arguably HAL perspective of the Calgary city skyline, based on the longer above video input feed I created:

Update 1: Nevermind magnets (cool though they are) - what if I just put some kind of notch thing on the sides so they dovetail together?  +ease of assembly, cheaper, potentially a structural weakness? test & iterate - could be as simple as a convex thing on three alternating sides and a matching concave shape on the others. Then you just fit them together, maybe just a twist thing

This is something I've been thing about for awhile, is the idea of modular memory capsules - hexagonal containers about two inches tall, an inch or two wide at the longest part, a clear cover and magnets on 3 alternating sides, so they could be magneted together - containers each for the collection of a small object of emotional or memory significance.

Each one stands alone or can be (magnetically?) connected to others to form a larger, evolving structure of emotional significance, memories and trinkets, kept secure and optionally on display.

 So they could be laid out flat on a table, or hung for a wall - think of honeycomb but for trinkets, mementos, memories.

 Possibly magnets only in the back with a metal or magnetic board or backing, although that'd reduce the modularity. The capsules are meant to be easily rearrangeable as there's a desire for a new memory or trinket, or one removed, easily rearrangeable display.

For a public space or gallery the capsules could be  installed as part of an interactive exhibit. Visitors could contribute their own memories or artifacts, adding a communal layer to the idea. This would also foster an evolving collection as different users add their own stories over time.

 Fabrication - 3d printed bodies, windowed panels of laser-cut clear acrylic, probably slotted in - somehow secured? Mechanisms are fragile but I don't want a windowed panel just easily falling out. Maybe friction fit, but then that wears out over time. 

Could be installed as a timeline view, or grouped according to theme or emotion or major event.

 Could also be used as a storytelling tool, each capsule holding a different narratively relevant small item or note.
